Put away your fortitude It stinks of lies Give up the baby He won’t save you now Asbestos worries Pitter patter ‘round the outskirts It’s victory day For your cherished indecision The mirrored absence of The antiquated Dissipating Before my eyes I threw my towel Out of the ring I get things mixed up Before I realise it’s all lies What the point In being jovial? I saw your friends And they saw my arse cheeks There’s a pretty philosophy About caring But its intricacies They seem to elude me And I don’t wanna concede Needless phallacies They’re in abundance Quivering at the sight of antitheses Holy hell This stopped being fun long ago I don’t know Have a word with my brain cells And send them home

about

Volk Soup have put their effort at festive fame behind them and are back to making the music that comes more naturally to them: something hard to put your finger on.

The terrain of The Commiserator is unsteady. Getting your footing on a song whose rhythm is this unpredictable is quite the challenge. And it’s hard to pin-point exactly where Volk Soup are drawing from. It’s no surprise then that this feels like Volk Soup at their most original. The new members push and pull the song, a clear sign that they’ve added brain power with twice as many influences, dragging us further away from any obvious source material that may have played a part in The Commiserator’s inception.

In a live-set full of head bangers The Commiserator is a moment of hip-shaking reprieve. Jones’ scream of “I saw your friends/and they saw my arse cheeks”—one of the more clearly heard lines delivered across the course of a Volk Soup set—stands out as a picture of shameful antisocialism in an environment of unease. There’s a sense of confusion as the band exit the second chorus, seemingly unaware of where to go next, before they drive back into the groove with a climatic build. Do you swing your arms or scratch your head? Why not both?

Continuing their run of singles with a B-side, this time Volk Soup back their A-side with Corneal Erosion Syndrome, a one minute belter that, much like the subject of the lyric, tears through and erodes before you know what’s happened. It’s a little more back-to-basics that it’s A-side, travelling in one straight line with all the energy the band can muster, all six members emphasising the same notes. It’s no wonder then that the song can’t last more than a minute. It’s the sound of a band making
noise with a purpose.

Volk Soup Leeds, UK

Soupy

Rearing their snarling heads, Volk Soup seek to put themselves securely on the map
beginning in the fertile land of the North of England, making good use of the venues
and populated post-punk scene at their disposal.

Volk Soup’s message is far from complete as they are armed to the teeth with an arsenal of more volatile strings to their bow.
